Faculty & Staff

Sarah Hughes Lead Teacher, 4x3/4s

Ali Miller Lead Teacher, 4x4s, Assistant Teacher, 3x3s

Sarah earned her B.A. in Psychology from Syracuse University, where she developed a strong foundation in child development and a lasting curiosity about how children grow - physically, socially, emotionally, cognitively, and linguistically.  Over the past nine years, her experience as a parent, co-op parent helper, and lead teacher at Fort Hunt Preschool has deepened that understanding, and more importantly, shown her the incredible value of learning and growing together within a cooperative community.  These experiences reinforced her belief that children thrive in environments built on connection, curiosity, collaboration, and a strong sense of community.

A native of the DC/Northern Virgina area, Sarah lives with her husband and their three children.  Outside the classroom, she enjoys coaching her daughters' soccer team, spending time outdoors with her family, and attending outdoor concerts.  She is always on the lookout for a great live band or new artists to add to the playlist, so music recommendations are always welcome!  Her family is equally happy exploring a trail or settling in for a quiet day at home. They value the simple, often unexpected moments that bring people together.

Sarah is excited to create an environment where children feel known, supported, and inspired to explore.  She is looking forward to being a part of a cooperative community where children are encouraged to wonder and develop confidence in who they are and how they contribute to the world around them.

Alexandria (Ali) Miller grew up in Mansfield, Texas, and earned her degree in Education from the University of Texas at Arlington. Her early experiences as a dancer and an aunt inspired her love for working with young children and supporting their creativity and growth. Through her involvement in Tri Delta and its philanthropic partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, she developed a deep commitment to making a meaningful difference in children’s lives.

Ali brings the values she learned through dance — discipline, teamwork, creativity, and self-expression — into the classroom. She is dedicated to fostering a safe, respectful, and joyful environment where each child feels known and celebrated. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, staying active, and savoring a good cup of coffee.

Casey Myers Assistant Teacher, 4x3/4s & 5x5s

Casey Myers is a Weston, West Virginia native, bringing four years of teaching assistant experience and some co-lead teacher experience to Tauxemont Cooperative Preschool. She earned her associate's degree in medical administration/information technology in 2009 and worked in medical offices as a records clerk. She is currently enrolled at Northern Virginia Community College and taking courses to complete an Education degree, while earning hands-on experience.

Casey is excited to provide positive guidance within an inclusive classroom, assisting and supporting the children of Tauxemont towards their individual educational goals. She believes that she found her love of teaching within the small community of Tauxemont when both of her children attended. She held a position on the board, which furthered her love and knowledge of the community. Outside of school, Casey enjoys attending a family book club, exploring new places, and spending time with her family and friends.

Cynthia Silva Assistant Director, Lead Teacher, 2x3s & 3x3s

Cynthia Silva grew up in a Coast Guard family, spending her childhood hiking, skiing, and camping as her family moved across the country. These experiences shaped her love of nature and appreciation for diverse communities and cultures. She earned her BFA in Painting from Boston University and later completed her Master’s degree in Historic Preservation at the University of Pennsylvania. Her early career included conservation and educational work with museums, cultural institutions, and the National Park Service.

Becoming a mother of two boys sparked her passion for early childhood education. Cynthia joined Tauxemont as a parent in 2012 and has since served in many roles, including Board member, substitute, assistant, and lead teacher. She enjoys sharing her love of art, music, and the outdoors through hands-on exploration at our little school in the woods. Cynthia believes in honoring each child’s individuality while nurturing growth and connection within the classroom community. Outside of school, she enjoys travel, making things, and impromptu dance parties with her boys.
